The Garden Design Process
Planting Design
Rejuvenating lacklustre borders or creating new ones can revitalise your garden.
I will meet with you to view the garden and discuss how you’d like your borders to look, I’ll also make a simple survey. I will then produce an image board to give you the feel of the planting design. Once you are happy with the suggested ideas, I’ll produce a detailed planting plan with a schedule of plants.
Full Garden Design
If you haven’t worked with a garden designer before it is helpful to understand the process. Your project may not include all the steps below, it depends on the complexity and budget.
Step 1: Initial meeting and site visit
Our first meeting will be to discuss your ideas, practical considerations and how much you’d like to invest in the garden. We’ll look at the existing garden together and talk through your wishlist, preferred style and materials. All this information will be put into the draft brief, which I will send you following the meeting along with a fee proposal.
Step 2: Site survey
Once you have approved the brief we will undertake a site survey and soil analysis. This may be done by a professional surveyor, depending on the size and complexity of the garden.
Step 3: Concept Design
I will draw up a preliminary design to convey my ideas for the garden based on the information in the brief and further consultation with you, as necessary. I will also produce an image board to give you the feel of the garden with examples of materials, features and planting style.
Step 4: Detailed Design
I will update the concept design with any revisions then move on to produce detailed final plans for the project including dimensions, levels, planting plans and schedule of materials and plants. These can be used to obtain quotes from landscapers for construction of your design.
Step 5: Aftercare
Once your new design has been built, I will produce a maintenance plan for the planting. I can also make further visits to see how the garden is developing and can help with further updates.
